IT services and software provider, Unisys, and Intel have partnered to build a secure computing platform capable of handling the demanding requirements of mission-critical Cloud and Big Data workloads, while allowing Unix clients to migrate from legacy RISC-based platforms.
The platform will combine Unisys' advanced secure partitioning (s-Par) technology with Intel Xeon processor family innovations, including: Intel Integrated I/O to increase input/output speed and provide greater bandwidth using PCI Express Generation 3 (PCIe 3.0); Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0; Intel Advanced Encryption Standard New Instructions (AES NI) for more efficient high-volume encryption. Integration of additional Intel innovations is on the roadmap.
"The innovative platform capitalises on Intel Xeon processor breakthroughs and the larger software ecosystem advancement to give organisations a powerful new alternative from costly, outmoded RISC systems," Intel datacentre and connected solutions group vice-president of marketing, Shannon Poulin, said.
Unisys believes the platform will be the first architecture based on Intel Xeon processors to bring enterprise-level security, availability, scalability and predictable performance to the three key IT challenges facing today.
This includes harnessing the power of the Cloud by allowing organisations to host Linux, Windows and migrated Unix application workloads on the same platform and provision them across all delivery models.
Unisys claims it will also enable the application of Big Data to real-world applications through "extraordinary scalability," and the ability to run open-source Hadoop queries in one partition, adding virtual machines as necessary for real-time resolutions.
Additionally, it will give customers the opportunity to move from Unix-RISC systems to an Intel x86 platforms through cost-efficient migration.
According to Unisys, "Leading industry analysts estimate that segments of the Cloud computing, Big Data and Unix-RISC migration markets represent an aggregate market in excess of $US23 billion, opening potential joint growth opportunities for Unisys and Intel over the next several years."
According to a statement, the platform will be released "later in 2013," and will aim at the multi-billion-dollar market.
Unisys said it will reveal further details on the new environment at its Universe client-centred event from September 9 to 11 in Chicago.
