Samsung Galaxy Mega 2: Release date
The Samsung Galaxy Mega 2's release date is up in the air but it is rumoured that the firm will announce the device soon. It's likely to be unveiled at IFA 2014 in Berlin in September.
Indeed, earlier today (19 August), Sammobile.com received its official firmware, suggesting an imminent launch.
Samsung Galaxy Mega 2: Price
We can only speculate on price for now but we expect the new Galaxy Mega 2 to be pitched as a cheaper alternative to the big-screen Galaxy Note range. Our money is on a mid-range price tag so £300-400 on a SIM-free basis.
Samsung Galaxy Mega 2: Specs
Sammobile has received a tip from an insider suggesting the Galaxy Mega 2 is codenamed Vasta and has the model number SM-G750F. The European version has a 5.99in HD (1280×720) Super AMOLED display, a Samsung Exynos 4415 SoC with a 1.4GHz quad-core Cortex-A9 CPU, 533MHz Mali-400MP4 graphics, 2GB of RAM, a 12Mp rear camera that records full-HD video at 30fps, plus 8GB of internal memory, expandable via microSD. It says the Mega 2 has neither a fingerprint scanner nor a heart-rate sensor.
It will also have 802.11n Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, DLNA, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, GPS, GLONASS and an IR blaster. The Galaxy Mega 2 will run Android 4.4.4 KitKat with Samsung's latest Magazine UX, as seen on the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Alpha.
New software features include Easy Side Panel, which enables on-screen navigation buttons on the right/left side of the display, depending on the primary hand of the user.
Hardware specifications for the Galaxy Mega 2 have also been spotted on GFXBench 3.0, the app we use at PC Advisor for benchmarking the graphics capability of mobile devices.
The Galaxy Mega 2 is listed as featuring a 5.9in screen, in-between the two sizes of the original Mega (5.8in and 6.3in). The resolution matches that of the larger existing model at 720p HD – the smaller edition has a qHD resolution.
In fact, according to PhoneArena.com, the Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 has a 5.98in screen with a 720x1280-pixel resolution. It spotted the Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 in the database of China’s Telecommunications Equipment Certification Center.
That database reports the following specification: 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 64-bit processor; 2GB RAM; Android 4.4 KitKat; 8GB storage; microSD card support; 5Mp front camera; 13Mp rear camera; 163.6x84.9x8.6mm.
This is in line with GFXBench, which lists the processor as 1.2GHz quad-core quoting it as a Qualcomm (ARMv7) chip with 1.8GB of RAM (presumably will be listed as 2GB) and an Adreno 306 GPU. There's just 5.1GB of storage available so we assume the Galaxy Mega 2 has 8GB before preloaded software.
Speaking of software, the OS is Android 4.4.3 KitKat which is almost the latest version. The rear-facing camera shoots video in up to Full HD and features autofocus, face detection, a flash and touch focus. HDR has a red cross by it so looks to be missing. Meanwhile, the front camera also supports full-HD video.
Other hardware specs listed are an accelerometer, Bluetooth, a compass, GPS, a gyroscope, a light sensor, NFC, a proximity sensor and Wi-Fi.
