Samsung and Android continue to dominate mobile usage, with new data showing Samsung to be the top mobile handset manufacturer overall with 25.9 percent market share in the US.

Rival Apple saw its handset share grow fastest, racing past Motorola into third place, but it was Google’s Android OS that grew fastest.

Google Android smartphones continued to grow share in the US mobile market, accounting for 50.8 percent of smartphone subscribers, while Apple captured 31.4 percent, according to comScore.

This follows UK data that we reported yesterday showing the Samsung Galaxy S3 as the most popular smartphone in the UK.

comScore’s MobiLens service reports key trends in the US mobile phone industry during the three month average period ending April 2012, having surveyed more than 30,000 US mobile subscribers.

For the three-month average period ending in April, 234 million Americans age 13 and older used mobile devices, with more than 107 million owning smartphones (up 6% compared to January).

Samsung ranked as the top OEM with 25.9 percent of US mobile subscribers (up 0.5%), followed by LG with 19.2 percent share (down 0.5%).

Apple continued to grow its mobile handset share in the OEM market, ranking third with 14.4% (up 1.6%), followed by Motorola with 12.5% and HTC with 6%.

Google’s Android OS ranked as the top smartphone platform with 50.8% market share (up 2.2%).

Apple’s iPhone share of the smartphone market increased 1.9 percentage points to 31.4 percent. BlackBerry smartphones ranked third with 11.6% share (down the most with a -3.6% drop), followed by Microsoft (4%, down from 4.4%) and Symbian (1.3%, a fall from 1.5%).

Mobile content usage

Apps and games were the largest gainers in terms of mobile content usage.

Downloaded applications were used by 50.2% of subscribers (up 1.6%), while browsers were used by 49.0% (up 0.5%).

Accessing of social networking sites or blogs increased 0.3 percentage points to 36% of mobile subscribers.

Game-playing was done by 33.1% of the mobile audience (up 1.3%), while 25.8% listened to music on their phones (up 1.3%).

In April, comScore reports 74.1% of US mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile device.
