Nearly half of smartphone owners use or plan to use their handset to shop online, says ABI Research.

And, according to the research firm, 53 percent already use their smartphone for mobile banking.

Senior analyst Mark Beccue said mobile commerce is "finally starting to achieve a mass market appeal".

Furthermore, 17 percent of non-smartphone owners admitted using or intending to use mobile banking.

"It's not just smartphone owners: non-smartphone mobile users' interest in mobile banking and commerce services, while lower than that among smartphone owners, is also on the rise," Beccue said.

"These findings are part of a larger picture which quantifies smartphone users' consistently higher use of a wide range of activities and features, from mobile browsing through multimedia to navigation," added primary research director Janet Wise.
