One in 10 of all online purchases in the UK are made using an iPad, new figures from IBM reveal. The figures show just how popular Apple's tablet is, and how convenient a choice it is for armchair shopping.

IBM's figures show that usage of Apple's tablet has doubled since last year. Apple's iPhone is also responsible for a further 6.5 per cent of all traffic.

The iPad is, perhaps unsurprisingly, the tablet of choice for online shoppers with over 95 per cent of tablet shoppers using an iPad.

IBM noted that online shopping overall was up 18 per cent on Monday 26 November from the same day the previous year.

Social media websites have turned out to be surprisingly poor at referring people to online shopping. Only 0.22 per cent of all online sales came via a social media referral. Four major retailers closed their Facebook storefronts in 2012: The Gap, J.C. Penny, Nordstrom and Gamestop due to lack of interest. Forester research analyst told Bloomberg 'it was like trying to sell stuff to people while they're hanging out with their friends at the bar."

So it seems that Apple has a real foothold in the world of online shopping at the moment. However, with the news that Amazon over tripled its daily sales record for Kindle devices with the Kindle Fire HD Black Friday sale the iPad may have some competition this time next year.
