Subscription e-book service Oyster has released a web app for desktop and mobile browsers, plugging the holes in its native app support.
The $10 per month service, which lets users read as much as they want from over 500,000 books, had previously been available on iPhone, iPad and Android devices. The new web apps should allow users to keep reading on Windows Phones, Windows laptops and tablets, Macs, and Blackberry handsets.
"Knowing that about a third of ebook readers regularly read on the web, we've had our sights set on this launch for some time," Eric Stromberg, co-founder and CEO of Oyster, said in a prepared statement. "This marks an important next step on our mission to provide the best product on as many devices as possible."
Wide platform support was one of the main advantages offered by Amazon's Kindle Unlimited, which launched its own subscription e-book service last week. Like Oyster, Kindle Unlimited costs $10 per month, and it's available on any device where there's a Kindle app.
In its web apps announcement, Oyster was quick to point out where its service trumps Kindle Unlimited. Although Kindle Unlimited has more books (600,000-plus in total), it doesn't have support from any major publishers, and draws mostly from Amazon's self-publishing platform. Oyster's service has books from Simon & Schuster and HarperCollins, and the company says that 89 of its top 100 most-read e-books aren't available on Amazon's service.
Scribd, another subscription e-book service, has support from the major publishers as well. It costs $9 per month, but only supports iOS and Android for now. As the competition around subscription e-books gets fiercer, it seems that users will benefit from better apps and more choices.
