Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege story and gameplay: What’s the story behind Rainbow Six Siege?

The inspiration for Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege comes from counter terrorist operatives around the world. It includes intense close quarters confrontations, tactics, team play and, of course, explosions. The game is the first close quarters Rainbow Six game and requires players to transform their environments into strongholds by setting traps, fortifying doors and windows and creating defensive systems to prevent a breach by the Rainbow team.

The “short range specialist operators” come from five of the most renowned counter terrorist units in the world; The British SAS, American SWAT, French GIGN, German GSG9 and the Russian SPETSNAZ, with each team having different areas of expertise.

The best part of Rainbow Six Siege? Everything is destructible. Walls can be destroyed to create new lines of fire and you have the ability to breach through ceilings and floors, allowing for a tactical edge that isn’t available in many first person shooters. The environment reacts dynamically depending on the size and calibre of bullets used, as well as the amount of explosives used.

Ubisoft claim that the online multiplayer mode “sets a new bar for intense firefights and expert strategy” which could be true, as the below online gameplay video suggests.

IGN has also posted a 35-minute gameplay session if you wanted to get a better idea of what Rainbow Six Siege can offer:

Ubisoft has big plans for Rainbow Six Siege, as Yves Guillemot, CEO of Ubisoft, said, "Over its lifetime, we believe Rainbow Six: Siege has the potential to become the highest-selling shooter in Ubisoft's history" according to a Gamespot report.  But why is Ubisoft so confident? Many games are popular for weeks/months and then trail off as newer games are released, but Ubisoft has a trick up its sleeve.

“This game will continue to live for a long time as we update with content for a long time” Guillemot said. So, there are plans for downloadable content to keep people interested in the game, which is a good idea as its proven to work with popular first person shooters like Battlefield and Call of Duty, who both release DLC throughout the first year of its release.
