VMware launched today its VMware vCloud Hybrid Service (vCHS) in Japan - the first Asian market and third in the world to deploy this Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) public cloud solution, the virtualisation and cloud infrastructure company said in its media statement.
This hybrid cloud service will be provided under a joint-venture agreement with Japanese telecommunications operator SoftBank Telecom Corp and SoftBank Commerce & Service Corp. (SoftBank C&S).
In this partnership, VMware will build, manage, operate and support the vCHS and provide the primary sales route to market through VMware's ecosystem of partners. On the other hand, SoftBank Telecom will contribute data centre facilities, the physical network and a sales force team. As for SoftBank C&S, its contribution will also include a sales force team, as well as over 7,000 resellers in Japan.
According to VMware's media statement, the vCHS enables seamless extension of a private on-premise cloud to the public cloud in a way that's compatible with existing IT assets. The result is that IT departments can manage a "best of both worlds" cloud environment in a totally unified manner.
"VMware vCloud Hybrid Service is growing quickly in the US and UK, and the capability we are talking about today addresses Japan's data locality, privacy, security and sovereignty challenges," said Pat Gelsinger, Chief Executive Officer of VMware. "Customers are looking for a way to seamlessly extend their applications to the cloud and we are excited to extend these capabilities to the Japan market. More such deployments will follow, each tailored to suit the needs of key markets in Asia Pacific."
vCHS is launching a Beta Program today in Japan and will become generally available in the fourth quarter of 2014. It is currently available in five sites in the US and UK, with plans for further expansion in EMEA and APJ. In fact, the company announced in a blog post yesterday (July 14, 2014) of its plans to work with China Telecom Corporation to build a hybrid cloud service in China.
