Expedia, the online travel spin-off of Microsoft, this week reported £300 million in total bookings for the second quarter.
That’s a record for Expedia, but it still trails behind the £400 million in second-quarter bookings that archrival Travelocity.com announced two weeks ago.
Both companies continue to lose money: Expedia reported a net loss of £28 million on revenue of £47 million for the second quarter, while Travelocity said it lost £9 million on revenue of £31 million.
But both Expedia and Travelocity already have managed to eclipse the total level of bookings that they reported for all of last year.
Despite the continued losses, Expedia's and Travelocity's performances have exceeded levels predicted at the beginning of the year.
Meanwhile UK-based travel site Lastminute.com has reported narrowing losses for the latest quarter, announcing pre-tax losses of £9.27m. This compares with £11m in the previous quarter.
The site currently claims two million registered users across Europe, with around 30% outside the UK.
Lastminute.com is hoping to switch its dependency on the travel industry to entertainment. 47% of the site’s sales are non-travel items.
