Linux is making a stand in the Far East markets, with overwhelming demand for HP's low-cost laptop in Thailand and striking a deal with Japanese ISP Edge to push its operating system (OS) to home, business and education users in the country.

HP introduced its Linux laptop nearly two weeks ago as part of a Thai government push to provide the public with cheaper computers. Since the program was launched local press have reported that over 19,000 computers have been ordered. The local press has even suggested that HP will not be able to keep up with demand, and that other computer makers may have to step into the breach.

The notebook is based on an 800MHz Via processor, with 128MB of RAM, a 20GB hard drive and the Linux operating system.

Meanwhile the Japanese market looks set to be bombarded with the Linux message. Controversial Linux developer's partnership with Edge should see the operating system touted to all computer users from small businesses to non-profit and government organisations.

"LindowsOS is filling the affordability and reliability void for computer users not only domestically, but internationally", said CEO Michael Robertson. plans to localise the operating system for the Japanese market and the product launch is due to take place sometime in the next couple of months in Tokyo.
