BT has launched a competition to find the most advanced and creative broadband user from local communities, in a bid to inspire and inform other users about possible ADSL applications.

The Broadband Britain Challenge is open to any business or individual who uses ADSL at work, at home, for education or leisure purposes. The winner will be honoured at the national final in London on 12 September, but unfortunately the chances of any cash prizes look slim to none.

"We believe the way to drive the development of broadband Britain is at the grass roots level. We're firmly committed to achieving the government's aim of broadband Britain by 2005. I am confident the challenge will play a key role in boosting knowledge and uptake of ADSL," said Philippa Winterburn, head of broadband marketing at BT Wholesale.

Users must submit their entries under one of the following categories:

  • Education
  • Voluntary/not for profit/charity
  • Public sector
  • Businesses (up to 250 employees)
  • Large corporations
  • Home users
  • Youth

    Dr Michael Barrett from the Institute of Management Studies at the University of Cambridge will chair the judging panel. He will be looking for users who are able to demonstrate the ease with which they can transfer their knowledge to others.
