Super thin and light, but with powerful processors, the computer industry hopes that Ultrabooks will help consumer’s pour money back into a market that has been severely damaged by tablets.

The Consumer Electronics Association expects 30 to 50 Ultrabooks to launch at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show, but according to one analyst, pricing these new devices proves to be a challenge.

Bob O’Donnell: Apple set the bar with its Macbook Air that debuted 3 years ago and PC makers are now trying to catch up. Even Apple though had issues with hitting the magic number.

Ultrabooks though are trying to offer up differentiators. For example Intel, which owns the trademark on the name Ultrabook, has talked about adding NFC or near field communication to the devices for secure transactions. Intel also showed Ultrabooks with touch controls and accelerometers and even tried convincing attendees that you can in fact wave your Ultrabook in the air without looking strange.

IDC predicts that 25 million Ultrabooks will be sold this year, representing about 10% of the overall notebook market. Windows 8 could potentially help sales as well.
