SSuite NoteBook Editor is an interesting plain text/ RTF/ DOC editor, easy to use and with plenty of features.

The program is portable, and doesn't have any major dependencies (no need for .NET, Java or anything else), so runs happily on anything from Windows 95 up.

The interface has no menus, just a toolbar, and it takes a moment to figure out how everything works. But there's support for most standard shortcuts (Ctrl+O to open etc), and tooltips for the various buttons and icons, so you'll soon begin to find your way around.

Opening the Read Me.rtf allows you to see and play with many of the program's features. There's a tabbed interface; thumbnail views of each page; word and character counts on the status bar; a zoom slider; increase/ decrease font size buttons; and complete control over fonts, text alignment, indents, lists, paragraph styles and more.

This isn't just a plain text editor, so of course you can insert pictures as required. But that's not all. There are tools to insert symbols, emoticons, "Character Art" (text with custom fills and shadings), even tables.

If you can think of a reason to use it, there's an option to view and edit the raw RTF code which represents your document.

When you're finished, the document may be saved as a plain text format, RTF or DOC file, or exported as an image. There's also an option to save it as a PDF, although this is limited to the plain text content only, no graphics or styling.

Verdict

SSuite NoteBook Editor's interface is quirky, and could be easier to use, but there's a lot of interesting and unusual functionality here which more than justifies the download.
