What Microsoft launched today: Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL
Microsoft launches the Lumia 640. This is a Windows Phone smartphone that will be upgraded to Windows 10 later this year. The Lumia 640 comes with a 5-inch screen, 1.2Ghz quad core chip, and 3G and 4G LTE. It has an 8MP camera, 2500mAh battery cell, and it is also NFC enabled. Microsoft said there will be single and dual sim variants. The Lumia 640 will be available 'later this year'. It will cost 139 Euros.
Microsoft has also released an bigger version, known as the Lumia 640 XL. This smartphone has a 1080p 5.7-inch screen, 13mp camera and 4G LTE. The Lumia 640 XL will cost 189 Euros.
What Microsoft said about the Lumia 640 launch
Before the event Microsoft said: "Mobile is transforming communication, advancing the next payment system that alters commerce, and expanding ways in which we interact. Similarly, the world’s premier industry continues to expand. Once again taking place at Fira Gran Via – the world-class venue in the heart of the Mobile World Capital. You won’t want to miss the opportunity to witness the industry’s continued expansion and growth."
"In just a few days, we will be at the Mobile World Congress 2015 to share how you can #achievemore with Microsoft," it added.
What we thought Microsoft would announce at MWC 2015
See how wrong we were!
Although most smartphones leak, it's not entirely clear what Microsoft will unveil today. Rumours suggest multiple Lumia handsets in various sizes between 4- and 5.7in with budget prices. Product codes include the RM-1031, RM-1062, RM-1072, RM-1109 and RM-1113.
We're also hoping that Microsoft will take the wraps off a new flagship phone which will be the Lumia 940 although it's quite possible that this will be launched later in the year closer to the release of Windows 10.
Microsoft doesn’t normally have a big presence at shows like MWC but will be in Barcelona this year. A press conference will take place at 8:30am on 2 March.
“Mobile is transforming communication, advancing the next payment system that alters commerce, and expanding ways in which we interact. Similarly, the world’s premier industry continues to expand. Once again taking place at Fira Gran Via – the world-class venue in the heart of the Mobile World Capital. You won’t want to miss the opportunity to witness the industry’s continued expansion and growth,” said the firm.
Although that doesn’t give much away we expect to hear more about Windows 10 on smartphones and tablets. We could certainly see some new devices unveiled but a new flagship Lumia (the Lumia 940?) is less likely and will probably be announced later in the year closer to the full launch of Windows 10.
If you can’t wait to get Windows 10 on your phone you can download the Technical Preview now if you have a selected Lumia handset and don’t mind running buggy software.
