Phonesuit Elite 5 Battery Case review

Phonesuit Elite 5 battery case for iPhone 5s and 5

The Phonesuit Elite 5 Battery Case is a real challenger to Mophie’s ubiquitous Juice Pack family of battery cases for the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s.

Mophie is the big brand in the mobile battery world, and it produces some great products including the Juice Pack Air range of battery cases for iPhones and the Galaxy S4.

We also like its Powerstation range of portable battery chargers, but recently recommended a new entrant from a company called Phonesuit. Its Flex Micro Battery Pack doesn’t need a USB cable to link to the iPhone 5 as it has a Lightning connector built in.

So we were excited to get our hands on Phonesuit’s battery case for the iPhone 5, and 5s: the Phonesuit Elite 5 Battery Case.

Like other iPhone battery cases it extends your daily smartphone use by including an external battery built into its protective case. See: Best iPhone battery cases compared.

Phonesuit Elite 5 Battery Case: The technical bit

Batteries come in different shapes and sizes but the most important thing is their capacity – that is, the amount of battery power it stores.

The Phonesuit Elite 5 packs a 2,100mAh battery, which is equivalent to Mophie’s top-of-the-range Juice Pack Plus battery case, which costs a little more. Measured in Watt hours this is rated as 7.7Wh.

What you need to know is that this is another juice to pretty much 100 percent refill a near-dead iPhone. How many times would this have saved your smartphone day?

Longhaul flights, hungry apps, a few hours of a child playing on your phone, heavy location-based browsing… all these things will drain your iPhone battery fast. In our tests the Elite 5 did indeed manage to recharge a near-dead iPhone back to full-power virility.

Phonesuit Elite 5 Battery Case: design

The Phonesuit Elite 5 Battery Case feels lovely with a curvy, smooth, scratch-resistant soft-rubber skin that feels robust for its duties as a protective case.

It’s a little bit shorter (138mm) and narrower (62mm) than the Mophie Juice Pack Plus (142mm and 66.8mm), but a fraction heavier (79g vs 76g) – it’s not a huge difference but it’s noticeable.

The Elite 5 also beats the Juice Pack on audio. It’s the first iPhone 5 battery case we’ve seen that works with an angled headphone jack found on some headphones (not Apple’s or most other headphones), courtesy of a curved wide angle opening for the headphone jack at the bottom of the case.

Here is where another advantage can be found. You can actually see the speakers – covered up on most other battery cases. The volume and clarity improvements are noticeable. If you use your phone to listen to music without headphones you’ll appreciate this, and it also improves on general speakerphone sound.

We do prefer the Mophie’s covered button overlays for the volume controls, as the Phonesuit’s are quite deep to press. We’d say the same about the ring/silent mute switch but we found the Juice Pack Plus’s mute switch overlay overly fiddly.

We liked the fact that the Mophie Juice Packs bottom end is the small section that can easily be lifted off for when you want to sync your iPhone 5 or 5s to your computer via Lightning cable. The Phonesuit Elite 5 is built the other way round so pulling the phone from the case is a little more of an effort – but it’s this orientation that allows for the handy headphone jack and audio features.

Another difference is the camera cut out. As the Elite 5 was released after Apple’s unveiled the iPhone 5s its camera cutout is more generous than the Mophie, which was originally styled for the earlier iPhone 5. This won’t affect iPhone 5 users but 5s owners might prefer the extra cutout space.

Like all battery cases the Elite 5 charges via a supplied micro USB cable.

It is available in Metallic Black and Ice Silver colours. In our long-term tests we found that the Silver case showed signs of aging while the Black case kept its good looks for longer.

Phonesuit Elite 5 Battery Case: price

The Phonesuit Elite 5 Battery Case costs £74.95 on Amazon. You can also buy direct from Phonesuit – but the prohibitive shipping costs might put you off You need to add around $35 shipping (Fed-Ex international economy: 4-6 business days) to the $89.95 price – so it all depends on the £/$ rate. Currently it's about the same as on Amazon – with a total of about £75.

£75 is around the same price as the Mophie Juice Pack Air but cheaper than the Plus that has the same higher charge as the Elite.

OUR VERDICT

We are impressed with the Phonesuit Elite 5 Battery Case. It’s styled nicely, matches the Mophie Juice Pack Plus on extra battery power and is slightly smaller (although marginally heavier). Mophie is no longer the only battery case in town. The Elite 5 is a real contender for the crown.
