The supermarket has decided to take on Google, Apple and Amazon with a cheap Android tablet under the name Hudl (pronounced 'Huddle). The device will go on sale next Monday 30 September with a low price tag of just £119.

Philip Clarke, CEO of Tesco said: "Hudl is a colourful, accessible tablet for the whole family to enjoy. The first stage in our tablet offering, it’s convenient, integrated and easy to use with no compromise on spec. Customers are quite rightly very discerning about the technology they buy so we knew we had to be competitive on all fronts."

Tesco says the Hudl has been designed for 20 million customers and more. Whether it expects to sell that many is another matter. Hudl has been designed and built by Tesco from scratch.

The Tesco Hudl has a 7 in screen with a 1440 x 900 resolution, a 1.5 GHz quad-core processor, 16 GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot for up to 32 GB cards. Other specifications include a micro-HDMI port, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and up to nine hours of battery life.

The Hudl will be available in four colours from launch: black, blue, red and purple. The tablet runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and has access to Tesco's content services Blinkbox and ClubCard TV.

We'll be taking a look at the Tesco Hudl later today to keep an eye out for a hands-on review.
