Audio is probably one of the last considerations (if you even think about it at all) when choosing a tablet. Fact is, most budget Android tablets have tinny speakers and are nothing special to listen to, even if you use headphones. Lenovo hopes to change that with the Tab 2 A8: here's what you need to know about its release date, price and specs.

Lenovo Tab 2 A8 price

The Lenovo Tab 2 A8 will cost £130 inc VAT for the Wi-Fi only model. There's also going to be a dual-SIM model which will cost more (no UK price has been announced, only a rough figure of $180) and will support voice calls, effectively making it a giant phablet.

Lenovo Tab 2 A8 specifications

The key spec is support for Dolby Atmos via headphones. This is a "a moving audio experience over headphones where sound seems to come from all directions, including overhead, putting users inside the action."

Our colleague Melissa Riofrio tested out the A8 at MWC and had this to say about the audio: "We listened to the Tab 2 A8's Dolby Atmos sound using headphones (the built-in speakers are nothing special). The technology makes you think you're hearing sounds coming not just from left and right, but also above, behind, ahead...it's a distinctly better audio experience."

The 8in screen - screen size is what the model number refers to - is an IPS panel with a resolution of 1280x800 pixels.

And as well as "media junkies", as Lenovo puts it, the A8 is also aimed at "shutterbugs". However, don't get too excited: the 5Mp rear camera is hardly cutting edge, but the 2Mp front camera has decent potential for Skype chats.

Another spec you won't be shouting about is the MediaTek quad-core processor. It may be 64-bit, but we'd be surprised if it tops any performance charts. We will, of course, report back when we get a Tab 2 A8 for review.

Lenovo says the microSD slot supports up to 32GB of extra storage, and comes in four colours: Pearl White, Ebony, Midnight Blue or Neon Pink.

In terms of software, there's good news for Android purists: the Tab 2 A8 ships with plain Android Lollipop.
