Olympus µ Tough 6010 waterproof camera Olympus has launched a £299 ruggedised digital camera that can capture 12Mp of detail and then apply zany effects to them via a Magic Filters feature.

Designed to appeal to sports enthusiasts and the outward bound, the µ Tough 6010 has a 3.6x wide (28-102mm) optical zoom, dual image stabilisation and is waterproof to a depth of three metres.

As well as being waterproof, the µ Tough 6010 can withstand temperature extremes down to at least -10C. Olympus describes the camera as "shockproof, waterproof and freezeproof" and as "a sturdy and reliable companion that will meet any challenge".

Images can be composed or reviewed on the camera's 2.7in 230,000 pixel LCD. Olympus says it's used the same zoom and electronics as on its Tough 8000 model, which was launched in January. However, the µ Tough 6010 additionally offers Pin Hole, Pop Art, Fish Eye and Sketch filters. Similar filters are included are on the retro-styled Olympus PEN E-P1 micro FourThirds camera that was launched last month.

Scene modes can be manually selected, but the camera also has an i-Auto mode that selects one of the five most common scenes. A Beauty Mode and face-recognition for up to 16 subjects in a shot are also included.

The Olympus µ Tough 6010 goes onsale at an RRP of £299 this month and comes in a choice of four distinctive colours.
