With three new wireless all-in-one printers launched today, Lexmark is firmly pinning its hopes on consumers and small businesses with wireless networks.

Each of the models in the line-up offers automatic duplex (double-sided) printing as well as having built-in media card slots should you wish to print straight from the removable memory card you use in your digital camera or cameraphone.

Lexmark's £120 inc VAT X6570 Wireless All-in-One will be aimed at small business users and, in addition to wi-fi printing, scanning and photocopying, will have a fax function and a 25-sheet automatic document feeder.

The X4850 Wireless All-in-One will also cost £130 but will be more consumer-focused, with a 2.4in colour LCD built-in to the main unit so users can select and roughly edit images from media cards before printing. The Lexmark X4850 Wireless All-in-One will have a PictBridge port so photos can be sent straight from a digital camera to the printer unit, bypassing the PC altogether.

Finally, Lexmark's X7550 Wireless All-in-One will combine the attributes of the other two multifunction devices, with both business credentials such as fax capabilities and the colour screen and media card support that digital photo fans are likely to covet. This £170 model also offers faster print speeds than the other devices in the range. Lexmark claims up to 30ppm (pages per minute) plain text can be printed or 27ppm if colour is featured.

Lexmark seems to think that going wireless will save the hard-pressed British workforce precious time – the company claims the average UK wage slave works overtime at least three times a week.

"Lexmark's new all-in-ones deliver business-class productivity with the added advantages of wireless to help busy professionals get more done quickly, easily and affordably," says Lexmark's Marcus Harvey, director of consumer printers.

We're not quite sure that follows. Sure, wireless means there's less walking up and down stairs from study to sofa if you happen to be tapping away hastily completing that report and decide to print it out to proofread over dinner, but we're not sure that really counts. Duplex printing, on the other hand, saves both time and paper, which we're all for.

Wireless printing reduces stress. Official!

However, we've recently had a look at one of Lexmark's wireless all-in-ones, the Lexmark X4550, and we have to admit that its not a bad little multifunction device. The inclusion of wi-fi printing for its £100 inc VAT seemed a bit of a boon as, often, wireless capabilities are a 'step up' feature found in pricey models at the top end of printer companies' ranges.

Lexmark says the Wireless All-in-One X7550, X4850 and X6570 will be available from September. View pictures of the Lexmark wireless models on the next page >>
