The LaCie LaCinema Rugged is able to play full 1080p high-definition video. LaCie says it's the first such player in its class to support Full HD.

Content can be played directly from the LaCinema Rugged HD device, which attaches to an HDTV or other display via an HDMI cable, which LaCie includes in the box. It connects to either a PC or a Mac by USB.

Formats supported include Mpeg4, H.264 video, WMV (Windows Media Video which plays natively in Windows Media Player) and MKV, a format popular with video downloaders.

A built-in menu system allows users to easily find and cue up tracks and videos to be played back on the device. The portable player comes with 500GB of storage.

LaCie multimedia product manager Christelle Dexet said "The LaCinema Rugged HD not only provides the ultimate mobile design, but it allows users to store large amounts of HD content and play it wherever they desire."

The LaCinema Rugged HD is part of a range of minimalist design multimedia drives designed by Neil Poulton to be unobtrusive but look stylish in a home living environment.

The Rugged devices in the LaCinema range are encased in a scratch-resistant aluminium shell, have internal anti-shock absorbers and shock-resistant rubber bumper to better protect their contents.

The LaCinema Rugged HD player can be bought direct from LaCie via its online store and costs £259.99.
