Vexia Econav 435 satnav Vexia is relaunching its Econav 'green' satnav device, pushing the fuel saving and carbon reduction benefits of its new 4.3in screen portable navigation unit. The £169 satnav goes onsale from next week and will be primed with UK and Ireland maps.

A fairly standard touchscreen model, the Vexia Econav 435 is designed to allow you to "drive, save and enjoy". Its fuel efficient driving advice could result in cost savings of up to £400 in the first year of ownership, claims its maker.

The satnav has a standard navigation mode to direct you from A to B but also has an 'eco' screen where you can input details of the car you're driving, whether it has more than one passenger and the engine capacity. Vexia says updating and maintaining this vehicle-specific database in order to offer accurate driving efficiency advice is where the big challenge lies.

Once you've saved your vehicle details and have entered your journey details, the Econav routes you along roads where you are less likely to waste fuel. The main fuel savings come from the traffic light system it uses to tell you whether you are driving in a suitably 'green' manner, have selected the correct gear and aren't over-revving the engine.

Your green credentials, along with the gear you should be in, are shown on the Econav's 4.3in screen. In addition, the satnav shows the safe braking distance between you and the vehicle in front, expressed in either metres or feet.

The Econav 435 is powered by a 400MHz processor and uses TeleAtlas maps. It has a 2GB internal memory on which the database of vehicles and engine sizes is stored. An SD Card slot can be used for additional maps. Alternatively, there is a western Europe version of the Econav that costs £219.

As with most satellite navigation devices, there are both 2D and 3D modes and onscreen instructions can be displayed in any of 20 different languages. A pedestrian mode can be specified and the Econav also comes with a lane assistant feature to help ensure the safe negotitation of complex junctions.

Econav 350 review

The Vexia Econav 435 will be joined in October by two smaller models - a 3.5in screen UK and Ireland model and a 3.5in screen European model. A smartphone version of the software that helps drivers save money on fuel is also planned.
