Lenovo is going head-to-head with Asus' Eee PC by launching two IdeaPad mini laptops. The Lenovo IdeaPad S9 and IdeaPad S10 laptops cost from £279.

The IdeadPad is a 1in thick mini laptop that weighs just under 1kg and is available in two models; the S9 has an 8.9in display while the S10 has a 10.2in screen. Both versions use an energy-efficient LED backlit display and are powered by an Intel Atom processor and 1GB of RAM.

Customers can choose between Windows XP and Linux operating systems and designate either a 160GB hard disk drive or a 4GB SSD (solid state drive).

Lenovo's IdeaPad mini laptops will be available in a choice of colours including black, red, white and baby pink. The laptops have an integrated webcam and come with Wi-Fi, a 4-in-1 card reader and have two USB ports. Bluetooth connectivity is available as an option extra.

"As rapidly as the technology changes, today's consumers are looking for mobile products that feature the best of basic computing functions in an extremely compact and affordable form. Lenovo designed the IdeaPad netbooks for that purpose," said Liu Jun, senior vice-president of Lenovo's consumer business group.

The Lenovo IdeaPad S9 is priced at £279 while the S10 costs £319. Both machines will be available in the UK from October.
