Carphone Warehouse is joining the likes of Asus, Acer and HP by launching a mini laptop. Developed by Elonex, the 10.2in WebBook features a 1.6GHz processor, a full Qwerty keyboard, 512MB memory and three USB ports.

In a move that puts the Carphone Warehouse WebBook in direct competition with the Asus Eee PC, the 1.3kg machine will be available with either Linux or Windows XP preinstalled.

Earlier today, Acer announced its take on the mini laptop, the Acer Aspire One.

Carphone Warehouse's version will undercut even Elonex's own-brand £99 ONE education-focused laptop by being offered for free - in return to becoming a customer of the company's TalkTalk broadband and phone service.

Regardless of the version chosen, users get Wi-Fi connectivity so they can take full advantage of their Carphone Warehouse TalkTalk broadband connection, a 3-in-1 memory card reader that supports SD, MSpro and MMC memory cards.

Customers can choose between a white or black model of the laptop. The standard model has 2GB of solid state flash memory, although this can be substituted for a 2.5in hard disk drive.

The Carphone Warehouse says it will be launching other models of mini laptop later in the year.

The WebBook will be available this month and is free of charge when users take out a broadband package from and stores across the country.
