Apple tonight updated its Mac mini range of tiny desktop PCs, adding Core i5 and Core i7 processors to its already petite aluminium frame. Here are all the details of the new Mac mini, as well as the price and photos.

Apple tonight announced updates to its Mac mini pocket-sized computer, but the uninitiated may be hard-pressed to notice the difference. That's because Apple has updated the specifications of the new Mac mini, leaving the design largely unchanged since the last update in 2011. The new Mac mini continues to measure 36x197x197mm, and weighs just 1.22kg.

As well as running Apple OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, the new Mac mini now comes with third generation dual-core Intel Core i5 and quad-core Intel Core i7 processors. Apple claims that this upgrade means the new Mac minis are up to twice as fast as their predecessors. As standard you get 4GB of 1600 MHz RAM, with support for up to 16GB. Perhaps more importantly, the integrated graphics capabilities inherent in Intel Ivy Bridge chipsets means that the new Mac minis' graphics capabilities are potentially up to 65 percent faster. But the option to add in a discrete graphics card has been quietly removed from the range.
