Best new features of the iPhone 6S: Improved processor and RAM

The iPhone 6S is rumoured to feature Apple’s unannounced A9 chipset, which Srini Sundararajan from Summit Research claims will have “performance to kill for”. This is likely to be coupled with an M9 motion co-processor, which allows your iPhone to gather information about movement and exercise in a more battery efficient way, ideal for those of us that use our iPhone for tracking workouts.

As well as a new processor that offers “performance to kill for”, the new iPhone is rumoured to pack 2GB of RAM, double the amount of RAM found in the iPhone 6.

Best new features of the iPhone 6S: Force Touch technology

The iPhone 6S is also said to feature Force Touch, the technology made famous with the Apple Watch and MacBook earlier on in 2015. The technology allows the iPhone to detect the amount of force used when interacting with the display, and can tell the difference between a light tap and a hard press.

It’s been rumoured that the Force Touch technology will primarily be used for shortcuts on the iPhone – for example, instead of only being able to toggle Bluetooth/Wi-Fi from the iOS Control Centre, you’d be able to Force Touch the icon to open the Settings menu. Another example is Force Touching a point of interest in the Apple Maps app will provide you with turn-by-turn navigation from your current location.

The inclusion of Force Touch with the iPhone 6S has seemingly been confirmed by Bloomberg’s sources, and is also backed up by reports from the Wall Street Journal too.

Best new features of the iPhone 6S: Series 7000 aluminium

Another rumour suggests that the iPhone 6S could boast the same series 7000 aluminium that’s being used in the Apple Watch. The series 7000 aluminium is 60 percent stronger than standard aluminium, but doesn’t add much in terms of weight, which makes it ideal for the next iPhone. Hopefully a reinforced frame and stronger materials can put to bed any worries about the iPhone 6S bending, especially after the bendgate saga of 2014.

The rumour came from Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI securities, a well-connected analyst with a great track record when it comes to Apple rumours. The rumour was first reported by Macotakara, who summarised the analyst’s research note. This rumour falls in line with other reports, including one from AppleInsider.

Best new features of the iPhone 6S: Storage improvements

iPhone users were excited when Apple announced last year that the iPhone 6 would ship with an improved storage capacity. Instead of offering 16-, 32- and 64GB storage options with the iPhone 6, Apple would offer 16-, 64- and 128GB of storage, which makes sense when you think about the amount of videos/photos/apps we have stored on our devices.

However, many were confused by the inclusion of a 16GB device, which is less-than-ideal for many users in this day and age, especially when using an iPhone 6. Those worries may be a thing of the past with the iPhone 6S though, as it’s claimed that the next flagship iPhone will ship with 32-, 64- or 128GB of storage as standard.

That’s according to M.I.C Gadget anyway, who reports that “We can’t tell you from what Foxconn’s department we received information, but we can only say that the packaging of the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus don’t have sticker with “16GB capacity”, but 32, 64, 128.” This is contrary to reports from 9to5Mac, which posted an image of a 16GB Toshiba flash chip with a 19nm process, which is reportedly destined for the iPhone 6S.

Best new features of the iPhone 6S: Camera improvements

The iPhone camera hasn’t had a megapixel bump since the introduction of the iPhone 4S, back in 2011 – though this isn’t to say the camera hasn’t improved, as the internals of the camera are improved every year and the quality of the iPhone 6 camera is great. However, it looks like Apple has finally decided to ramp up the rear camera sensor of the iPhone 6S, with reports claiming that it’ll feature a 12Mp sensor.

There were also rumours of a 21Mp sensor, however we feel that Apple will most likely opt for the 12Mp sensor as more megapixels doesn’t always equate to better quality.

As well as an improved rear camera, it looks like the front camera may also be improved. These rumours come directly from the iOS 9 beta code, which makes reference to the front-facing camera being able to record 1080p video at 60fps, record 240fps slow motion and support a flash. With ‘selfies’ becoming a staple of every day life in the 21st century, we imagine that the iPhone 6S will indeed feature improved cameras, both front and back.

Best new features of the iPhone 6S: New colour options

One final rumour suggests that the iPhone 6S might be available in additional colours to the standard gold, silver and grey options. Rumours are suggesting that Apple could offer a rose gold colour, possibly to match the rose gold Apple Watch Edition. We’ve included a concept image of the rose gold iPhone 6S to give you some idea of what the 6S could look like, created by designer Martin Hajek.

Other rumours and leaked photos suggest that we could even see a pink iPhone 6S, though judging by the photos it could easily be a re-anodised iPhone 6, a service offered by third-party companies including MendMyi.
