Need a free Office suite for your PC, laptop or tablet? Download and install the new Microsoft Office 2016 for free today: we show you how to get the latest Office software free on your Windows PC, laptop or tablet. Also see: Best laptops 2015 and Best Windows tablets 2015.

Microsoft Office 2016 is a completely free Public Preview for anyone running Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10 (also see: How to get Windows 10 free today), with no Office 365 subscription required.

Note, however, that this is merely a preview version of Office 2016. This is not the finished software and it will almost certainly contain a few bugs. If you're a confident PC user then fire away, although less tech-savvy users will probably prefer to wait for the final version of the software to be released.

Real-time document collaboration, improved integration with third-party apps for accessing and sharing data, plus support for natural-language search queries are among the new features in Office 2016. Here's how to start using the new Office free today.

How to get free Office 2016 software for your Windows PC, laptop or tablet

Step 1. Before you can run Office 2016 you'll need to ensure you are running Windows 7 or later on your PC or laptop. You'll also need to remove any existing Office installations from your PC, so check you have the software disc and licence key to hand if you'll want to reinstall it later.

To uninstall Office in Windows 8 you should start typing Control Panel on the Start screen and choose it in the search results that appear. (If you're using Windows 7, click the Start button and Choose Control Panel.) Now choose Programs, Programs and Features, right-click your Office installation and choose Uninstall.

If you don't have a record of your Office licence key and think you may want to reinstall it once the Office 2016 Public Preview expires, see how to find your lost Windows or Microsoft Office product key.

Step 2. Now you're ready to download the Office 2016 Public Preview. You can download free Office 2016 here. Note the different instructions for Home and Enterprise users, and be sure to select the correct version (32- or 64-bit) for your PC.

Step 3. Find the downloaded file in your Downloads folder, then double-click it to begin installing Office 2016 Public Preview.

Step 4. The first time you launch an Office app you may be asked to enter the email address associated with your Office 365 subscription. If you have one, great! If you don't then don't worry: you don't need one. Click the 'Enter a product key' link below and type in the following code:

Office 2016 Public Preview should now be up and running on your PC, laptop or tablet. It will automatically update when new versions are available, and the preview will expire only when the final version of the software is released. You can send feedback to Microsoft by clicking the smiley face icon in the top right corner of any Office app.
