QUESTION I'm having trouble with my wireless keyboard and mouse. Characters can sometimes take several seconds to appear onscreen, the mouse doesn't always respond and the cursor often disappears out of view.
I've replaced the batteries in both peripherals and ensured a good line of sight between the infrared controller and the keyboard. I frequently press the ‘Connect' button, too. I thought the problem might be caused by a background service, but it occurs even when only Microsoft Word and my email client are in use. Melanie Bryant
HELPROOM ANSWER This type of problem is usually caused by interference between the peripherals and the receiver module. Rather than infrared, wireless keyboards connect using RF. A good line of sight between the two is not required, but an interference-free connection is.
Devices causing interference can include wireless speakers, computer power supplies, monitors and mobile phones – particularly if the problem occurs intermittently.
To check whether there's an issue with your PC, try using the keyboard on another machine if one is available. You should also make sure that the receiver is connected directly to the PC and not via a USB hub or KVM switch.
