Music subscriptions are expensive, and you can often make do with the ad-supported tracks available on YouTube. That's fine when you have an internet connection, but what about when you don't?

We've written before about whether it is illegal or morally incorrect to download YouTube video, and it's definitely in violation of YouTube's terms and conditions. We advocate nothing, and FWIW in this tutorial we'll be converting only our own YouTube uploads to MP3.

We'll be focusing on an online service called convert2mp3 here, but it is one of many. All have much the same procedure, which in essence involves entering the URL of the YouTube video into the search bar, adding some tags and hitting download.

Let's take you through the process step by step.

Find the YouTube video URL

Find the video you want to convert on YouTube, then right-click it and choose 'Copy video URL'.

Alternatively, copy the URL directly from the address bar.

Head to a YouTube-to-MP3 converter site

Now head to convert2mp3 in your browser. Paste the video URL into the text box using Ctrl + V. Click 'Convert'.

Alternatively you can use the search bar to search for a specific video from within convert2mp3, without going to YouTube first.

Add tags

On the next page you'll get to set your tags for the song.

The immediate options are for the artist and track names, but if you expand the 'advanced tags' you can also set an album name and use the video thumbnail as a cover image.

You'll also get the chance to listen to the MP3 and check it's worked correctly.

Once you're done, click 'Continue'.

Download your MP3

On the next page a button will appear allowing you to download your MP3 file. Click this.

The MP3 file will be downloaded to your computer. Look for it in the Downloads folder, or wherever on your machine you have specified downloads should go.

You can also share the link to the converted file, save it to a DropBox account, or easily click to start a new conversion.
