The iPad and iPad mini tablets both lend themselves well to watching TV shows and films, movies if you prefer the Hollywood term.

The best way to watch free films on your iPad is via a selection of apps. Here are a few of the best ones but we can't guarantee you like the selection of films. Nevertheless, they are free.

NFB FilmsNFB Films

The National Film Board (NFB) Film app provides more than 2,000 films which you can watch for free including feature films, documentaries and animations. You can download them for up to 48 hours so you can watch offline.

BBC iPlayerBBC iPlayer

The BBC iPlayer app is mostly for watching TV shows but there are normally a few films available at any one moment in time. In general you can't download them for offline viewing though.

TV CatchUpTVCatchUp

It's not specifically for films but the TVCatchUp app is like having a freeview box inside your iPad. There are plenty of channels which show films regularly, namely Film4. You can only watch live but you can pause and see what's on now and next.


There are plenty of free films and TV shows to stream for nothing on Crackle. Usage is unlimited and you can watch the content over Wi-Fi or a mobile data connection. Furthermore, the app supports AirPlay so you can watch on your TV.

Sky GoSky Go

Ok, you need to be a Sky customer with Sky Movies for this one but the Sky Go app is free and allows you to watch the Sky Movies channels and via the on-demand section of the app.


SnagFilms only has a small selection of indie films, but if that genre floats your boat then there are more than 300 on offer to stream to your iPad. Like some of the other apps you can search the collection and use Apple AirPlay.
