Windows vista shutdown screen problems

Recently I was given a computer that a family member had no use for, and I am having problems shutting down the computer. When I hit shutdown it will either restart and say "Windows has recovered from an unknown error" or more commonly the screen will go as if the pixels have stuffed up, and if I press the off button on the tower then it will turn off. Here is a link to a photo of the screen.click here

Bit of a guess, but might be worth running sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt (if you don't know how to do that, come back). It can solve odd problems if the registry is corrupted. If you're running XP, you'd probably need the Windows disk do do this (Vista and after don't need it as the data is on a file on the hard disk).
