I have just tried to install my printer onto a new desktop running win 7 professional.

Although windows has found the printer it says it cannot find the drivers. I have downloaded them twice from the Canon web site. How can I force it to find them. As it is a usb connection I cannot find anyway to browse manually for the drivers. Does anyone have a suggestion as I really need to start printing.

in its driver database - there's no need to install a new driver, Windows should install the printer without any additional software being required.

Turn off your computer, connect the printer, turn it on, and then start your computer. Windows will find the printer and install the driver for it.

This applies to both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Windows 7.
