W7 wanting to format my external h d

W7 is intermittently having difficulty spotting my external HD ,and yesterday virtually all the (iTunes) music stored on it was "file not found" I have been ignoring messages saying that I must format the drive before use in the belief that this would actually wipe it. Is this correct? I realise that I'm going to have to replace the external . Will the recovery software advertised here help me get back the music (and now that I think of it - why is it just audio files that have gone missing?)

Yes formatting the drive will lose your data.

Try running the disk check tool on the drive - right click the drive - select properties - tools tab - disk check.
