Vista Instal Problem

Trying to instal Vista but cant even get past the HP Upgrade Assistant disc you have to run first. The first step is "Please wait while HP Upgrade Assistant uninstalls certain incompatible software components that will not work with Windows Vista. This process may take several minutes"
It has been running now for an hour and a half. It hasnt frozen, the green dots still move across the screen but nothing else is happening. Is it supposed to take this long. There isnt even a cancel button. I dont know whether to do a CTL ALT DEL to get out of it or leave it. Any ideas?

I'd cancel it and run the upgrade advisor from click here first, then uninstall anything it doesn't like manually.

And then do a clean install rather than an upgrade.

Thanks Kate but I had already done that. The only program that it flagged up as incompatible was Nero OEM
