Vista fails to recognise USB hard disk

I have a high spec custom PC with Windows Vista Ultimate installed. The problem is that when I plug in my WD passport USB drive it is not seen by Vista. I have tried it on my laptop which has XP and there are no problems. I have had the same problem with USB memory sticks. Anyone got any ideas?? Any help appreciated.....

First check your BIOS settings to ensure these ports are enabled.

Also check in Disc Management to see if its listed,if so you may have to intilise the drive.

The port is definately enabled, i've used it for my ipod and phone. It does not show up in disk managment for some reason and besides i dont want to re-format it as there's stuff on it. I'm losing faith in Vista!!
