Safely remove hardware

In my new vista pc i have an internal card reader which has worked for two weeks until now.
In control panel it shows as four removable devices,g,h,i and j.
The only slot i use is the sd card slot (h)
When i go to remove the card using safely remove hardware,i take the sd card out and when i return to "my computer" the only removable device showing is j
In device manager is a yellow exclamation mark saying-
Windows cannot use this hardware device because it has been prepared for "safe removal", but it has not been removed from the computer. (Code 47)

To fix this problem, unplug this device from your computer and then plug it in again.

So i reboot and alls well

Is it faulty or do i not need to use the safely remove hardware tool?

You don't need to use Safely Remove Hardware when using SD cards etc. in your card reader slots. What you've been doing is trying to "safely remove" your entire internal card reader, which is why you're having these problems.
