I've a problem with a corrupt MBR in Vista. I've recovered from this with XP (fixboot/fixmbr) but have never tried it in Vista. Any advice? MS recommend click here but is their a way to do it from my current session because booting has become problematic and often the operation just fails. I'm logged on at the moment and turning the laptop off isn't my preferred choice!

Not easily done from current session but you could try easyBCD which will attempt to repair the MBR but might require a back up.

Hi Zeppelyn. I've actually found a utility that WILL reset the Vista MBR from a current session click here the syntax is a little odd and you need to use CMD from the Vista Accessories file. You also need to open the CMD Properties (right click) and from Advanced select 'run as administrator' because even if you are in Administrator mode CMD ignores this and refuses to reset MBR.

If anyone is interested the Syntax once you are running in CMD is:

C:\> MbrFix /drive 0 fixmbr /vista /yes

I've also found it possible to enter CMD from the advanced repair options and then run from the c: prompt:

bootrec /fixmbr
