no audio after installing Vista SP1

Toshiba A205-S4617 laptop

After being notified through routine Windows Update that Vista SP1 was ready for download I let the installer update my system in the usual way.

Everything ran OK but I have lost audio output - there is a red 'x' at the side of the speaker icon on the taskbar and a window appears on hovering the mousepointer which says "No Audio Output Device is installed". The soundcard is a Realtek brand.

Device Manager is less-than-helpful suggesting that "This device is working properly" when I can tell it's not!

Can I / should I update the driver from the list provided by Windows when it offers to "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer" Can I make things worse? I don't have any sound anyway now....

Or will I have to uninstall what's left of the driver and download a new one?

Sorry, this link is better and confirms my view you should have a go at reinstalling the driver having checked one or two other things. click here
