.NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 wont install

I'm using a Windows Vista computer I bought in August this year and everything seems to have been working properly until 29-11-2007.
On that day the automatic download updates would not install the update "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1". All other updates installed properly.
I tried to manually install "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1" update but I get the failed message and Error code: 641

I clicked on Get Help and followed the instructions. I opened the Windows SoftwareDistribution folder have deleted the files in DataStore folder and also those in the Download folder but still the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 installation failed.

I even tried to uninstall Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 installed when my computer was new on 20/08/2007 to see if that would help but it would not uninstall. I got the message " The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance".

So perhaps I have a problem with Windows Installer.

The anti-virus program I use is NOD 32.
I only use the normal Windows Vista firewall etc.

Thank you for any help.

No the same problem here.

Having read around I understand (only understand not certain) that version 3 which comes with Vista covers the 1.1 version anyway.

If you get irritated with the reminders go to control panel and update history and right click the failed download, then select hide. It will not come up again but you can unhide in the future if you wish.

I decided to give it one more try. I uninstalled 1.1 in add remove programs then did a fresh download of 1.1 from here click here after which I chose the link on the same page to the 1.1 update and they both went in.

To be honest I'm not sure so I will not guess.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

But it still doesn't work

I've run Windows Cleanup Installer Utility and dotnetfx_cleanup_tool the .NET CleanUp Framework Cleanup tool.
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 no longer appears to be on my computer. It doesn't show in the "Uninstall a program" window, but still the .NET framework wont install.
The computer seems to work well otherwise.
Will I have to reinstall Vista to get everthing working correctly again?

just hide the update & wait for SP1.

Or read this thread in its entirety & download it directly.

Thanks for replying Rubus.

I've just followed the advice in that thread but still no luck.
Will Service Pack 1 (when it's available)cure it do you think?

SP1 will include all hotfixes & updates released since Vista hit the streets.

Don't worry about it. Hide it & forget it.
