INF files USB Problems.

What causes the error message "This may be because the INF was written for Windows 95 or later" How do you fix it ?
My USB cordless mouse suddenly did this. Googled it and there is loads of hit's for this problem. Nothing really definitve though.

which certainly worked. Why ?? What has gone wrong in the first place and can it be put right.
I tried an old ( working ) mouse and that gave the same result. Again this fix cured it. Other USB devices seem unaffected. Just the miceees !!
Somethings obviously happened ( corrupted .INF )but what do you do to fix it.

If ?? the INF folder is a protected Windows file, why does scf\ SCANNOW report no file violations found ?
