Hibernate in Vista

In XP you can set the PC to hibernate after xxx hours.

Where is this feature in Vista?

Control Panel, Hardware & Sound, Power Options, Change when the computer sleeps

Why hibernate? Switch the machine off.

Save the planet....8-|

Beware, hibernate can create problems with Vista if SP1 isn't installed.

I hibernate and have Vista SP1 installed and have not had any problems.

To be honest Hibernate IMO is only useful if you want to carry on EXACTLY where you were, by this I mean you could have your web browser and or programs open, you then select hibernate, when you switch back on all the programs/web browser pages open up where you were at prior to hibernating.

Anyway, I am sure I used the below to make Hibernate appear in the SHUTDOWN options:

The hibernate option can disappear after a disk cleanup as this can delete the hibernate file. Anyway there is a quick way to get back the hibernate option.

Click on your Vista start button, in the start search type cmd, cmd should now appear on the top left side of the start menu, you now need to right click on cmd and choose to run as administrator.

Then Key the following command:

powercfg /hibernate on

Check your shutdown options, you should see the hibernate option appear again. If not try restarting the computer and check the shutdown options

......To agree with rdave, switch the damn thing off. I've reached the point now where I unplug everything that has a) no time and date setting, and b) won't conflict with the day to day running of the house.

Thanks for all your responses. Problem now solved.

For those of you who asked "why hibernate?" - it's called personal choice.

"Problem now solved"

So how did you solve it?

  Clapton is God 21:00 30 Jun 2008

"So how did you solve it?"

By following chub_tor's instructions and working it out for myself thereafter

It's just it helps others who have the same problem if you can post back if/when the problem has been solved and also with the solution : )

Yep, I'm aware of that - I have been a contributor to these Forums since 2002. ;-))

Unfortunately, the old memory doesn't always kick in at the right time.
