Flash drive recognition

  compy 18:19 07 Feb 2011

win 7 pro. avg, zone alarm.
Comp will not recognize my flash drives.
Previously OK. Have not loaded anything apart from usual updates. A reboot doesn't help.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Do they work OK in any other PC? G

Yes. They work OK on my laptop which is running Vista.

Run this USB troubleshooter click here & see if it's of any help. G

I have tried the trouble shooter to no avail.
Matwiz will not run, it says its .dll is not available

Try the steps at click here - 2nd post by EdamAnchorman.

May be a slightly different problem but might work for you. G

I have now discoverd that if I boot with the flash drive already connected, it is recognised. If I remove the drive and then reconnect it appears in disk manager as disk 2, but I cannot assign a drive letter, and it does not appear in explorer.
If i connect my phone it's recognised as a drive immediatly.

Somewhere I read just shutting down & disconnecting the system's power cord from the wall socket for a minute or two, then reconnecting & booting up may help this kind of problem.

If the above doesn't help, also try this MS hotfix click here. Set a System Restore point before running it (or I think the OS will do it anyway). G

click here is something to try.

I had 2 out of five of my USB flash drives that refused to work with Win 7 32 bit. When I late changed to Win 7 64 bit they all worked fine.

It does seem that Win 7 has problems with some devices, a Google search throws up lots of dissatisfied users having the same problem.
