External H/D with Vista

I have a new Acer Aspire 9300 laptop running Vista Home Premium which I don't like much (Vista that is) but my biggest problem is I do a lot of photo and graphics work and most of my programs either won't install or run properly on Vista, upgrades and patches may eventually be available for some but not all and new Vista compatible CD's would cost a fortune, would it be possible to use an external HD running XP and would this cause any conflicts with Vista.

You would need to partition your built in hard drive and add XP to it.

This way, you can choose either XP or Vista to boot into.

Gradually update Vista until all vendors come up with upgrades for their respective software.

I believe that it depends on wether or not your laptop allows you to boot from a USB device.

Windows does not allow you to install on a USB device so to install it i think you will need to swap the external HD with the one in the laptop for the install.

But i have not done it myself so i am guessing.

Thanks guys, I'm going down the partition route and upgrading drivers etc on Vista until I can get a working environment on Vista.

Thanks again,
