Confused about 'My Documents

Ás a long time XP user who has just upgraded to Vista (Ultimate) due to a PC Rebuild I am a little confused about how to do a few things but 'My Documents' has me beat.

In XP, like a lot of people, I directed all my data to a separate (D) disk to make separation of system and data (not to mention, backup) a lot easier. I changed the properties of the 'My Documents' folder to point to the new location on my D disk.

Now, on Vista, 'My Documents' seems to be a system file. Can anyone throw any light on this and what I need to do to achieve my objective of having all my data on a separate disk?
