Can't word/excel files

Hi, never used a chat forum before. Really need some help/advice. I have just purchased a Dell xps which has windows vista home premium, it comes with microsoft works. I have copied and tranfered all of my word/excel files from my old laptop (acer 250 travelmate, windows xp pro, microsoft word 2002/office 2000). when i try to open any of these files, it says 'windows cannot open this file, windows needs to know what program you want to use to open it etc.
If any one out there can help, it would be most appreciated.

Have you tried right-clicking it and selecting 'Open with'?

You need to install MS Office because Works cannot directly open Word/Excel Files.

OpenOffice will though and it`s free. click here You need to tick the boxes on installation to associate OO with Word/Excel/Powerpoint applications and then open OO Writer, go to Tools>Options and under the Load/Save alter the default save options to "97, 2000 XP" values in the drop down boxes for both Word & Excel.

Haven't been able to open xls files since getting computer over a year ago - followed his advice and problem now sorted- thanks again
