Backup from XP to 7

  mousee 23:22 07 Feb 2011

I've just upgraded my XP desktop to Windows 7, prior to this I backed everything up to my Maxtor external HDD, I did a clean install of 7 instead of loading it over XP, but now I cannot restore my backup to the machine with 7 on it, any ideas please?

What program did you use.
What did you backup.
Did you just backup your files or did you backup the whole hard drive.

I did a back up of the whole hard drive, I'm wondering wether to format the drive, install XP then restore the backup then install 7 again.

As per BRYNIT asked: What program did you use?

If you have made an image of the xp harddrive and restore that you are attempting to replace W7 so that it will be back to XP.

You should only be restoring (copying into W7) your Data files (My Documents).

How this will be achieved depends on the program you used to make the the backup.

And you cannot install W7 as an upgrade to an existing XP.
You have to do a clean install of W7 (which wipes the harddrive of XP and all contents)

Also is your W7 32 bit or 64 bit?

I used the backup program in XP to copy everything over, I have installed 64 bit Windows 7.

Your main problem is that Win7 is a 64-bit OS while your XP is 32-bit OS. One cannot restore a Windows backup from 32-bit to 64-bit.

One can do a manual restore of course - i.e. copying & pasting data across. G
