Why so many different memory cards?

Would it have been so hard for the industry to stick to one design instead of dozens?

I have an Olympus camera and a load of xd cards so I am limiting myself to Olympus or Fuji for my next purchase as I don't want to waste money and have to buy new storage...

I'm just having a whinge... but I like the look of some of the Canon models at the moment.

Decisions, decisions.

I think you'll find that it's called 'competition'.

It's also partly to avoid having to pay royalties on patents - easier to design your own card that pay on someone elses.
