First time I have heard it!

I am guessing it could be short for Government Job, could mean a job as a civil servant which at one time was job for life. Not now

Unemployed - i.e. paid by the Government?

Not heard that one.

'govie job' slang for 'Government contractor Job' (does not specifically refer to a Government contractor - can sometimes refer derogatory to the standard of work done)
mostly used derogatory as in 'job's a lash up' 'one off bad job' 'job done by bunch of amateurs' 'bad work done and overpriced' 'easy money for cushy contract' etc etc.

The first time I heard the expression was in the north of England. I think the origin relates to an unofficial job being carried out for the 'Governor' or possibly for a senior member of staff who may well have attended Governor's School.

There are many other options - some above - which are also recognised.

Around my area a govie job is one where you are paid cash in hand, no tax etc.

Other terms are Scotching job ,Funny money, Backhander, Work on the side and countless other names I forget for now.

Hope this helps.

  Seth Haniel 14:59 20 Jan 2011

common usage up here in the North East
meaning job done on the cheap - or a 'cash in hand'

johndrew could be your "unofficial job being carried out for the 'Governor' "

Yes, lots of meanings, I think it depends on the context of the conversation.
