When will governments ever learn?

Pussy Riot plan to perform a new song critical of Putin and his regime. Yawn, what's new?

Pussy Riot get arrested on trumped up theft charges in order to stop them performing their new song. World-wide headlines.

When will governments learn that a combination of disdain, mockery and disinterest is the best way to neutralise non-violent protests?

The Chinese did not learn it in Tiananmen Square in 1989. Mind you it was so predictable - if the students had stopped sooner, they would have made as good a point. See:

Tiananmen

Ukraine is not looking too good at the moment either

Pussy Riot deserved to be locked up. Their musical output sucks. Three cheers for President Putin!

Is it really any wonder that people have given up trying to have serious discussions on here?

Funny you should ask, I have asked myself that question a few times.

"When will governments learn that a combination of disdain, mockery and disinterest is the best way to neutralise non-violent protests?"

But any government doing that must have it's citizens behind it in full support of that government, not stood in front looking down the barrel of a rifle.

That's right. But you don't build that support by showing you don't deserve it at every turn.

"That's right. But you don't build that support by showing you don't deserve it at every turn"

I would be interested in to which government you refer. Surely in most "civilised" democracies governments need support or they are not re - elected?
