Weather maps

I wondered how they were transmitted over the internet, for example this: click here. Is the background (the UK map in this case) sent just once, and the rain sent for each time snapshot and overlayed on top of the background? Or is each picture sent independently?

For those not familiar with the weather chart I mentioned, you press forward/back/play to get the different time snapshots.

I find this - click here - website to be better and here you can also click the button at the top to get a running half-hourly sequence over a few hours. Updates are usually about a half hour behind time though. TC.

Thanks TopCat, you may not have answered my question but the website looks good. Is there another website that predicts the rain a day or so ahead like the BBC one does?
