seems like they're in California and calling worldwide

looks like a Californian number that's been reported on several sites...

is a number that will try to get your credit card details if they actually speak to you when you answer the phone.

Assuming the 000 indicates that it's an American number, I tried ringing it.

You get a recorded message telling you the temperature and humidity, and then it asks for a PIN.

Strange

I just put the phone down in the case of cold calls (I'm on TPS, but it doesn't stop all of them especially those from abroad).

Me too Stuartli
I find that it is mostly calls from abroad and likely local firms working through the phone book in the most part- TPS does not seem to stop them.

Here's a handy site to identify unknown numbers

TPS has no effect on calls made from outside the UK. Often it appears to have little on certain sellers inside either.

TPS can only provide a service by getting the agreement of callers who operate within the UK not to have those numbers registered with it on their databases. This gives them some clout (legally?) if the subject businesses make calls to the numbers. However, they can`t enforce such a policy upon businesses outside of the UK influence.

I must be lucky - I've never had a cold caller in the 10 yrs I've lived in current address (but don't tell anyone!).
